Where Summer Begins: A Mandatory Stop at LUNCH Lobster Roll

LUNCH

Why This East End Staple Is Still the Ultimate Bite of Summer

After a content-packed weekend in the Hamptons, there’s one thing I never skip on the way home: LUNCH Lobster Roll. Sure, there’s always the usual traffic, and yes, sometimes you debate whether it’s worth pulling over for, but if you’ve ever been, you know the answer is always yes.

This time, we hit a decent stretch of slow-moving cars. Just when we started debating whether to keep going or pull off for a break, we saw the sign. That iconic red, white, and blue “LUNCH” sign that’s not just a roadside marker—it’s a promise. And we knew: this stop was happening.

The Story Behind the Sign

Since 1965, The Lobster Roll, affectionately known as “LUNCH”, has been an East End institution. Originally a humble seafood shack on the Napeague stretch between Amagansett and Montauk, it’s become so much more than just a restaurant. It’s a rite of summer. A nostalgic, sun-drenched pit stop where generations of beachgoers, surfers, and city escapees have pulled over to dig into overflowing lobster rolls and seaside classics.

It’s where Americana meets the ocean breeze—picnic tables, no-reservations charm, and a coastal vibe that feels frozen in the best way possible. It’s comfort. It’s tradition. It’s summer.

And now, with two locations (Napeague and Southampton), visiting LUNCH Lobster Roll has never been easier.

My Visit to the Southampton Location

When we arrived at the Southampton location, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and offered a choice between indoor or outdoor seating. The weather was perfect, so we made our way to the back patio and were promptly greeted by our server.

Outdoor Seating available at South Hampton location too

The South Hampton location has two indoor dining rooms, two bars, and a spacious outdoor patio that feels like a backyard dream. It’s casual, but thoughtfully designed. And for a restaurant that doesn’t take reservations, it’s great to see how quickly the team moves to seat and serve everyone efficiently.

Let’s Talk Lobster (and More)

The menu at LUNCH is expansive, but if it’s your first time—or your 50th—you’re probably there for one thing: the lobster roll.

They offer two iconic versions:

🦞 Classic Lobster Salad Roll

Cold water lobster claw and knuckle meat mixed with their proprietary mayo dressing and celery. Served cold on a toasted, split-top bun with a side of coleslaw. (Bonus: It can be made gluten-free!)

🔥 Hot Lobster Roll

Warm chunks of lobster served in drawn butter with a toasted bun on the side, plus coleslaw. Rich, buttery, and absolutely decadent. (Also gluten-free-friendly!)

Of course, the menu has plenty more: clam chowder, lobster bisque, steamers, pub sandwiches, salads, tacos—all of it fresh, flavorful, and made with the same commitment to honest, well-prepared food that started it all in 1965.

We went with one of each lobster roll. They came out fast, the service was fantastic, and the food? Phenomenal. We were in and out in under 20 minutes—and every second (and every bite) was worth it.

Why You Should Make LUNCH Your Next Stop

If you’re heading out east—or even just thinking about it—put LUNCH Lobster Roll on your must-visit list. Whether you’re a lobster roll purist or just craving that classic, summer-on-a-plate experience, this place never disappoints. It’s quick, it’s welcoming, and it serves up one of the most iconic meals you’ll find on Long Island.

LUNCH isn’t just about the food. It’s about the feeling—of summer, of nostalgia, of community, and of enjoying the simple things that make life delicious. So next time you’re crawling through traffic on your way back from the Hamptons, don’t just pass that famous sign—pull over. Order a lobster roll (or two). Take a breath. And remember what summer tastes like.

Because at LUNCH Lobster Roll, it’s not just a meal. It’s where summer lives.
