Phil's Pizzeria

A viral Long Island pizzeria, a powerful backstory, and a review that proves this spot is worth the visit

Long Island’s pizza scene found itself back in the national spotlight when Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy made yet another surprise visit—this time to Phil’s Pizzeria in Syosset. While the review itself created plenty of buzz, it’s the story behind the pizzeria, its owner, and a missed once-in-a-lifetime moment that has everyone talking.

The Viral Rise of Phil’s Pizzeria

Phil’s Pizzeria has become much more than just a local pizzeria. Owned by Anthony Laurino, the shop has built a massive social media following—over 180,000 on Instagram—thanks to his hilarious and highly relatable videos.

Anthony is known for reenacting outrageous customer interactions, shining a comedic light on the realities of working in the restaurant industry. His content has struck a chord with both industry workers and everyday customers alike.

And perhaps the most ironic—and entertaining—part? The owner’s name isn’t even Phil. Anthony proudly leans into the joke, often wearing a shirt that reads, “I’m not Phil,” adding another layer of personality to an already memorable brand.

A Full-Circle Story Years in the Making

What many people may not realize is that Phil’s Pizzeria has a meaningful connection to the Barstool Fund.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2021, the restaurant was struggling to stay afloat. After submitting a heartfelt video, Anthony received financial support from the Barstool Fund—help that ultimately allowed the business to survive during one of the toughest times for small businesses.

In an interview with Long Island content creator Tom Kelly, Anthony shared that he would “give his right leg” to meet Dave Portnoy one day, just to thank him and ask why he was chosen.

That dream nearly became reality.

When Portnoy walked into Phil’s Pizzeria to film a “One Bite” review, Anthony wasn’t there—he was attending the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. A twist of fate that no one could have predicted.

Still, Portnoy acknowledged him in the video, giving Anthony a shoutout and a virtual handshake before diving into the review.

The Review: A Strong Score by Portnoy Standards

Anyone who follows Dave Portnoy knows he has a very specific preference—he loves a crispy, well-done slice, while Long Island is more traditionally known for its softer, doughier style. Despite that, Phil’s Pizzeria held its own.

Portnoy awarded the slice a 7.5, which is considered a very strong score in his ranking system. He also took note of the Barstool Fund logo on the pizza boxes, bringing the story full circle in a meaningful way.

More Than Just Pizza: A Community Leader

Anthony Laurina is more than a viral personality and pizzeria owner—he’s also deeply rooted in giving back to the community.

He is one of the founders of Long Island Pizza Strong, alongside Alyssa Guidice of Dine-LI and Jim Serpico of Serpico Bread Co. Together, they have raised over $500,000 for families facing tragedy by organizing events where local pizzerias donate a portion of proceeds to those in need.

It’s a powerful reminder that behind the humor and viral videos is someone who truly shows up for his community.

Put Phil’s Pizzeria in Syosset on Your Bucket List

While Anthony may have missed his chance to meet Dave Portnoy this time, it feels like a moment that’s far from over. If anyone deserves a second shot, it’s him.

In the meantime, Phil’s Pizzeria in Syosset continues to thrive—not just because of its viral fame, but because the food delivers and the story behind it resonates.

For Long Islanders looking for their next slice, this is a spot that offers more than just great pizza—it offers personality, heart, and a true sense of community.

So next time you’re deciding where to eat, take the trip to Phil’s Pizza and see what all the buzz is about.

Just remember… don’t call Anthony “Phil.”
