“The Day I Almost Quit” Brings Raw, Honest Conversations to Long Island and Beyond
Known across Long Island as “The Cake Don,” Don Donneruno has built a reputation for creativity, artistry, and unforgettable custom cakes. But behind the brand is a story that many never see—and now, he’s ready to share it. With the launch of his new podcast, “The Day I Almost Quit,” Donneruno is stepping into a more personal space-one rooted in honesty, vulnerability, and real human connection.
The Moment That Started It All
The inspiration for the podcast comes from a deeply personal experience that dates back to 2012, when Donneruno found himself completely drained. “I was completely mentally, emotionally, and financially exhausted. I was officially beat down,” he shares. “At that point, I genuinely felt like giving up on my cake-making dream altogether.”
During that time, he wrote two pages in a journal—raw, unfiltered thoughts from one of the darkest moments in his life. Those pages would stay with him for years. “They weren’t written from a place of motivation or confidence,” he explains. “They were written from the perspective of somebody who felt overwhelmed, discouraged, anxious, and unsure if they could keep going.”
Looking back on them became a turning point. “They became a reminder of how close I came to quitting… and how powerful it is that I didn’t.”
Why “The Day I Almost Quit” Matters
That experience led to a powerful realization: everyone has a moment where they almost give up. “I think everybody has a ‘day they almost quit.’ Not just in business—in life,” Donneruno says. “The night you sat there thinking, ‘I don’t know if I can do this anymore.’”
Instead of focusing on success after the struggle, his podcast stays in that moment—the storm itself. “What makes the podcast special is that we stay in that moment,” he explains. “We talk about the fear, the pressure, the darkness—but also what pulled people through it.”

Real Conversations, No Filters
Listeners can expect something different from typical motivational content. “Real conversations. No fake motivation. No pretending life is perfect,” Donneruno says.
Each episode dives into the human side of success, featuring conversations about fear, rejection, anxiety, financial pressure, and identity—topics often left out of the spotlight. “My goal is for somebody listening alone at night to hear an episode and think: ‘Okay… maybe I’m not the only person feeling this way.’”
A Podcast Rooted in Connection
At its core, “The Day I Almost Quit” is about connection—and removing the stigma around struggle. “Most people are struggling silently,” Donneruno explains. “We live in a world where everybody posts the highlight reel, but very few people talk about the nights they were falling apart.”
By opening up these conversations, he hopes to create a sense of shared experience. “There’s power in hearing someone say, ‘I’ve been there too.’ It removes shame. It makes people feel less isolated.”
Big Names, Local Voices, Real Stories
While Donneruno has a dream list of guests that includes names like Sylvester Stallone, Nas, and Martha Stewart, he believes the most powerful stories may come from closer to home. “Some of the most powerful episodes might come from people nobody expects,” he says. “A local business owner. A parent. Someone who survived something impossible.”
Because, as he puts it: “Pain doesn’t care about status. And neither does resilience.”
Redefining Success
Through this journey, Donneruno’s definition of success has evolved. “Success is peace. Success is having meaningful relationships. Success is creating things that genuinely impact people,” he says. “I’ve learned that you can have money and still be miserable.”
Today, his motivation is simple but powerful. “I’m motivated by people. Stories. Connection,” he shares. “Something I create might genuinely affect somebody’s life or mindset.”
A Message for Long Island
There’s a strong local heartbeat behind this project, and Donneruno is deeply grateful for the community that supported him along the way. “Long Island changed my life,” he says. “The community here gave me a chance before I fully believed in myself.”
Now, he hopes to give something back by creating space for more honest conversations. “People in our own neighborhoods are struggling… but many feel like they have to hide it,” he says. “If this podcast can create more empathy and understanding, that’s bigger than entertainment to me.”
Words He Needed to Hear
Looking back on his own “day he almost quit,” Donneruno reflects on what he would tell himself now:
“This feeling is temporary. Don’t make a permanent decision based on a temporary moment.”
And perhaps the most powerful reminder of all:
“You do not need to have your entire life figured out today. You just need a plan to make it to tomorrow morning.”
Why You Should Tune In
“The Day I Almost Quit” is more than just a podcast—it’s a lifeline for anyone who has ever struggled, doubted themselves, or felt overwhelmed. “If somebody listens to an episode and decides not to give up on themselves,” Donneruno says, “then the podcast is doing what it was meant to do.”
