In June 2010, Barrier’s inaugural batches made their way to the public, showcasing the brewery’s commitment to producing world-class beers across a diverse range of styles. Despite starting on a humble 1-barrel system in a 1,000 sqft warehouse, the brewery impressively churned out over 700 barrels in its first year, serving accounts throughout Long Island, NYC, and Upstate NY.
The year 2012 marked a pivotal moment for Barrier Brewing as it relocated to a larger space and upgraded to a 5-barrel brewhouse, boasting an initial capacity of 1500 barrels. Unfortunately, this progress faced a setback when Hurricane Sandy dealt severe damage to the new facility, forcing Barrier to close its doors temporarily. Undeterred, and with the unwavering support of fellow brewers and the local beer community, Barrier triumphantly reopened its doors in February 2013.
The resilient spirit didn’t stop there. In 2017, Barrier Brewing Co. upgraded its brewhouse once again, this time to an impressive 20-barrel, 3-vessel system capable of brewing upwards of 15,000 barrels per year. This substantial expansion reflected the brewery’s commitment to meeting the increasing demand for its exceptional brews.
The journey of Barrier Brewing Co. is a testament to the dedication of its founders, Evan Klein, and the entire team. The brewery’s evolution from a 1-barrel system to a 20-barrel brewhouse showcases not only growth but also the ability to overcome significant challenges, exemplified by the impact of Hurricane Sandy.
