The Story Behind Six Harbors

In the heart of Huntington Village, Mark and Karen Heuwetter realized a dream three years in the making when they proudly opened Six Harbors Brewing Company in 2018. This microbrewery marked a significant addition to Huntington Village’s dynamic downtown, drawing patrons from across Long Island. What sets this brewery apart is not just its diverse beer styles, but the unique nautical/industrial ambiance that distinguishes it from typical breweries.

As residents intimately connected to the neighborhood, Mark and Karen successfully transformed Six Harbors into more than just a microbrewery. It’s an ‘experience’ cherished by beer enthusiasts of all levels, individuals of all ages, families, and even furry friends. Mark’s thirty-year Wall Street career equipped him with business and social skills crucial to the brewery’s success.

Mark’s journey into brewing began five years ago, fueled by a lifelong passion for beer. His college days, marked by makeshift brewing in dorm room closets, laid the foundation for what would become Six Harbors. Active in the local home brewers club, Hand Grenades and Home Brews, Mark’s passion evolved from a household hobby to a community endeavor.

Karen, a lifelong Huntington resident with a background in finance and real estate, shared Mark’s love for being on the water. When the family garage could no longer contain their brewing aspirations, the couple embarked on a mission to find a site in their hometown, aiming to create a destination reflecting their love for both brewing and waterfront living.

The vision was clear: not just a brewery but a space where the beer-making process unfolded before visitors’ eyes. Stainless fermenting tanks took center stage, allowing patrons to witness the brewing, kegging, and canning processes. Rustic and nautical décor, ample natural light through massive garage doors, and seating designed for comfort completed the inviting atmosphere.

The name ‘Six Harbors’ pays homage to the six harbors in the township of Huntington. True to their roots, the Heuwetters named their beers after these harbors, local neighborhoods, historical figures, and even their brew dogs – Buddy, Barley, and Brandy. Can you name all Six Harbors? Visit Six Harbors Brewing Company to discover not only great-tasting beer but also a community-centered space, where passion for brewing meets a love for life near the water.
