Supporting Local: A Movement, Not Just a Moment

Every time we choose to order from Amazon instead of a neighborhood shop, grab a meal at McDonald’s instead of a Local eatery, or opt for a Target run instead of visiting a small boutique, we are making a choice—one that directly impacts the businesses that make our communities unique.

When a Community Comes Together

Recently, the town of Islip came together to support Yankee Doodle Dandy, a beloved local eatery that was on the verge of closing its doors. Thanks to the efforts of Chef Michael Landesberg from Jackson Hall American Bar & Grill, and the overwhelming support from the community, they saw a surge of new customers, giving them a fighting chance to stay open. But the battle to save local businesses is far from over.

Just this past week, Dang BBQ in Islip announced they are struggling to keep their doors open and are calling on the community for support. And this isn’t just an Islip problem—this is happening in every town across Long Island. One by one, our favorite mom-and-pop shops, family-run restaurants, and small businesses are disappearing. And if we don’t act now, we’ll wake up one day to find ourselves surrounded only by big chains and corporate giants.

That’s why we’ve decided to do something about it.

Going Local Week

Going Local has teamed up with Chef Michael Landesberg to launch Going Local Week, a weeklong initiative designed to drive business to local restaurants, shops, and establishments. Think of it like Restaurant Week—but better.

Each month, we’ll bring Going Local Week to a different town, with participating Local businesses offering special discounts or promotions to encourage the community to shop and dine locally.

When Will Going Local Week Start?

We’re hoping to kick things off at the end of March and will start in Islip because we have no doubt the incredible people of Islip will show up like they always do. This is more than just a one-time event; it’s the start of a movement and we need your help.

How to Participate

If you are a local on Long Island and want to help, all we ask of you is to show up for your local businesses. Eat, drink & shop local every chance you can and stay tuned for more details about Going Local week!
