Come Celebrate Harry Potter’s Birthday in Huntington!
The Town of Huntington Historic Partnership is offering free children programs to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday from July 28th-August 11th, 2024. Each museum in the partnership will offer different Harry Potter Themed activities for children to come and enjoy!
Museums Featuring Harry Potter Themed Events & Activities
Walt Whitman Birthplace
From July 28th-August 3rd the Walt Whitman Birthplace will offer up an interactive Potter-themed tour where you can test your knowledge of the book that kicked off the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Participants will walk away with a certificate and their very own “chocolate frog” treat after completing the tour.
In addition, they will have Harry Potter themed merch and Butterbeer for sale. Each day, participants will have to find the “Sorcerer’s Stone” in a different spot in the historic home where Walt Whitman was born as well as “Find Harry!’
The tours start at 11:30am and run on the hour (11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30). Cost is $5pp for kids, adults or seniors and tickets can be purchased HERE!
Whaling Museum
From July 30th-August 11th from 11am-4pm, the Whaling Museum will have a Potter-themed Scavenger Hunt with Huntington’s largest Cauldron! Muggles and Wizards alike can enjoy a magical scavenger hunt throughout the museum’s galleries. After, the kids will design and decorate their very own wand to take home with them!
On August 1st, kids can watch “Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them” with showings at 1pm and 3pm. In addition, they will create their own Dragon Egg with gilded sea shells! Cost is price of admission plus $10 for participants ($5 for members) and no registration is needed. For more information, click HERE!
Vanderbilt Museum
From July 30th-August 4th, the Vanderbilt Museum will feature a Harry Potter-themed Map in the gallery. On July 30th they will offer a Baby Giant Spider Craft and August 6th they will have a Magical Moth craft! For more information, click HERE!
Huntington Historical Society
On July 30th at 10am, the Huntington Historical Society will allow kids to explore herbs from the Wizarding World and visit the Conklin Barn. Herbology is the study of magical and mundane plants and fungi, and was a required class taught at Hogwarts by Professor Sprout. Join in learning about herbs similar to the ones in the wizarding world are used in our world, both past and present! This event is free, but registration is required.
On August 7th at 10am, children can visit the Conklin Barn and have the chance to learn all about Owls! Owls are important magical creatures that deliver posts and parcels in the wizarding world.
Harry’s owl Hedwig and Ron Weasley’s owl Pigwidgeon were great companions to the young wizards and kids can learn fun facts about owls in our world! This event is free to attend, but registration is required.

Northport Historical Society
From July 31st-August 4th, the Northport Historical Society will be the pick up location for your Main Street Owl Scavenger Hunt! Northport’s Main street is filled with local shops and restaurants that all offer a welcoming feel and worth visiting!
Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium
From August 1st-4th, the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium will offer a Scavenger Hunt for Magical Creatures from 10am-6pm! Kids can also choose a Hogwarts Pet and craft a car, rat or toad!
Harry Potter Themed Sweets & Treats From Local Businesses
In addition to the Harry Potter themed events happening at our local museums, you can also score Harry Potter themed sweets and treats from 2 local businesses!
From July 28th- August 11th head to Sweetie Pies in Cold Spring Harbor for Butter Beer Lattes (decaf available)! If you’re looking for Chocolate Frogs, Owls, Bertie Botts, Jelly Slugs and Golden Snitches, head to Bon Bons Chocolatier in Huntington Village!
